PLC-Sinking and sourcing concepts

Sinking and Sourcing:

  • Sinking and sourcing are terms to describe a current flow relationship between field input and output devices in a control system and their power supply.

  • Sourcing I/O circuits supply current to sinking field devices.

  • Sinking I/O circuits receive current from sourcing field devices.

Sourcing Device with Sinking Input Module Circuit:

The field device is on the positive side of the power supply between the supply and the input terminal. When the field is activated it sources, current to input circuit .

Eg:

Sinking Device with Sourcing Input Module Circuit:

The field device is on the negative side of the power supply between the supply and the input terminal. When the field is activated it sinks, current to input circuit .

Eg:

Sinking Device with Sourcing Output Module Circuit:

The field device is on the negative side of the power supply between the supply and the output terminal. When the output is activated it sources, current to input circuit .

Eg:

Sourcing Device with Sinking Output Module Circuit:

The field device is on the positive side of the power supply between the supply and the output terminal. When the output is activated it sinks, current to input circuit .
